Joe Bellis - Tribute to a Gentleman
The recent passing of Joe Bellis,Club Captain in 1992 and President in 1998 brings to an end a period in the Club’s history in which one man instigated a policy of respect and dignity to all aspects of the Club’s activities-and that man was Joe Bellis, big in stature and huge in demeanour and personality. Joe was Halkyn through and through and didn’t take up Golf until comparatively late, his first sporting love being Cricket with his early years gaining a reputation for Sportsmanship around the County and beyond captaining the Halkyn side which won the inaugural Flintshire League in 1958. Joes involvement in Holywell Golf Club had its beginnings in the Cricket and Golf matches between our Clubs. He decided to swop Bats for Clubs and in doing so started a trend in which the village of Halkyn became the source of membership for many locals following in the footsteps of the man christened ‘The Godfather of the Halkyn Mafia!’ Men like his great friend, Elwyn Thomas, Colin Barker, Bryn Ellis, Bram Hopkins and John Woodfine amongst others followed Joe to Brynford all contributing a great deal to the success of our Club. His year of Captaincy was one of innovation and initiative both golf-wise and socially and Members supported him to the hilt. It was Joe who introduced the Club Night held on the first Saturday of each month when the Clubhouse was filled with Members and friends wining and dining and enjoying a variety of acts from Singers, Comedians, speciality acts such as Hypnotists etc. All benefitting the Club’s coffers. Although in Joe’s later years anno domini and failing health restricted his contact with the Club he never lost his interest in its activities and when Kevin and I went to visit him at home or in Hospital his first questions were always about the Club and its members, he retained that interest until the end. On Monday I heard that Joe’s health was deteriorating so Kevin and I went to visit him for what has turned out to be the last time and although he wasn’t aware of our presence I personally was so grateful to have seen him one last time.
