Proving his credentials...

Xander Schauffele showed U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk exactly what he was missing at Le Golf National, as he pulled off a stunning play-off victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Schauffele clawed back a three-shot deficit to fellow American Tony Finau, making birdies on the final two holes to force a play-off, before making another birdie at the first sudden-death hole to win his third PGA title. Schauffele was named 'Rookie of the Year' in the 2016-17 season, and is proving his credentials once again this year, despite switching equipment manufacturers at the start of the season.

Competition news

Am-Am

27 teams competed over 15 holes in the bitterly cold weather on Saturday, meaning the scoring for the day was far from spectacular mainly due to the weather conditions.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:

1st Trevor Pye, Charlie Payne, Malcolm Payne and Tony Kalacouski – 69pts - £35.44 each

2nd Chris Pierce, Jake Massey and Alastair Ross – 66pts - £25.63 each

Out of 103 players there were only 4 twos’ meaning a good pay out of £17.72 per two.

Both the Nearest the Pins were won by Chris Pierce.

HSS Turkey Trot

Another strong turnout of seniors played on Tuesday, a total of 52 players competed over 13 holes. There were many good scores on the day but none better than Ray Lewis’s fantastic 32 points.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:

2nd Ian Naylor – 28pts

Division 2:
1st Terry Commins – 27pts
2nd Clem Lang – 27pts

There were only 2 two’s recorded, each two was worth £23.40

What do you take from this?

As golfers, there's nothing more satisfying than a shot which is perfectly executed - even if it is a rare occurrence for many of us. It could be a booming drive which splits the fairway down the middle, or maybe a wedge shot which stops dead, two feet away from the hole. In fact, when you consider how often we use our wedges during a round of golf - see the graph below - the latter is something that we should all be striving to achieve.
