Best Ryder Cup ever?

So that’s it, as quickly as it started, it’s all over. The 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National will go down as one of Team Europe’s best ever performances on home soil, as they came away with a comprehensive 17.5 – 10.5 win over a much-fancied Team USA.

Whereas everything seemed to go right for Europe’s captain Thomas Bjorn; from wildcard picks, to pairing Tommy Fleetwood with Francesco Molinari to form the formidable “Moliwood”, his American counterpart Jim Furyk was left to rue some poor decisions. Tiger Woods, fresh from his TOUR Championship win last week, failed to win a single point, whilst Phil Mickelson was woeful for the whole tournament. Both were captain’s picks.

The standout player for the home team however was surely Francesco Molinari. Having won this year’s Open Championship, the Italian no doubt fancied his chances on a course which placed a premium on shot-making as opposed to bombing huge drives down the fairway. Molinari won all five of his matches, becoming the first European to win five points in one Ryder Cup. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that prior to this year's contest, Molinari had played six matches across two previous editions without winning a match. He now truly belongs amongst the world’s elite golfers.

Special mention should also go to Sergio Garcia, the Spaniard was a controversial wildcard choice from Bjorn, but was a crucial component of Team Europe’s victory. Garcia’s win over Rickie Fowler in the singles saw him become Europe’s leading all-time point-scorer in the Ryder Cup with 25.5 points, overtaking Sir Nick Faldo’s record.

Heart Foundation Medal

Another fine day on Saturday meant more good scoring throughout the divisions and plenty of two’s. Congratulations to the Terry Chaloner who was the overall winner of the Heart Foundation Medal with a brilliant score of 42 points.

There were 21 twos recorded in the competition. Each two was worth £3.81.

Midweek Comp

The final official Midweek Comp was well supported with 43 players competing over 10 holes.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:

Division 1:
1st Andy Jones – 23 pts - £29.27

Division 2:
1st Rae Carroll – 22pts - £29.27

Tim Saunders and Pete Bolwell recorded the only twos each winning £14.63.

A Pro's Midweek comp will continue to run on a Thursday until the clocks change.

Holywell GC Pro-Am 2018

Last Friday the golf club and I hosted 15 teams in the Annual Pro-Am. It was a fantastic day and we had some beautiful weather which helped!

The weather was matched by the golf on show, the leading Pro, Graham Cox shot a course record equalling 61 (-9). Matt Parsley who would have won on any other day shot a superb round of 63 to come second with two other players tied for 3rd on 66.

The outstanding scoring continued in the team event as 17 under was only good enough for 3rd place. The Lakeside Golf Centre team and the Midweek Comp team tied on 19 under but it was the Midweek Comp team who won on a back 9 count back.

Congratulations to Tim Saunders, Sion Johnson and Peter Jones.

I’d like to thank everyone who supported the event and made it a great day. Also a thank you must go to Carol, Jane, Joanne, Windows and the greens staff (Big Dave, Little Dave, Graham and Kev) without the help I received from everyone this event wouldn’t happen.

Finally, a thank you to my playing partners on the day Mr Captain, Mr President and Lady Captain. None of us had our finest games but we enjoyed in nontheless.

Junior Captains Day 2018

Although Sunday was a cold afternoon, the Juniors showed great spirit and concentration which is reflected in the good scores we had. Thanks to Junior Captain, Callum and all those who helped on the course and supported the Juniors at the Presentation.

Pro Am date

I am looking for players to play in a Pro-Am at Hawkstone Park on Wednesday the 17th October.

The cost is £40 per person which includes Bacon Baps, Coffee and Dinner.
