Welcome to this week’s Holywell Pro Shop Newsletter. We will be looking at some more success stories for Holywell members away from the club. We hope you're having a great week on and off the golf course.
Enjoy the read. |
Ryder Cup hopefuls staking their claim The final leaderboard at last week’s Italian Open made for interesting reading. Home favourite Francesco Molinari was attempting back-to-back victories after his previous week’s triumph at Wentworth but had to settle for second place, one behind Thorbjørn Olesen who captured his fifth European Tour title in the process. Both golfers will have their eyes firmly set on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team come September as well as several top-10 finishers from the Italian Open such as Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan, Poulter and Willett. Someone else looking to compete in Paris is young American Bryson DeChambeau who conjured up a timely victory at the Memorial Tournament. There were several stories at the beginning of the week including Justin Rose’s opportunity to rise to the top of the world rankings with a win (he finished T6) and Tiger Woods’ latest event of his eye-catching comeback (he led the field in several tee-to-green categories but faced putting woes throughout the week to end up six shots back), but DeChambeau stole the headlines with his playoff win to secure PGA title number two. |
You've got to be in it to win it!
Only eight days to go till the top players in the World descend on Shinnecock Hills for the 118th US Open. With many of the top players finding form heading into this year's event, it's a tough one to call. Our sweepstake is now up and running in the Pro Shop and entry is £1 per square.

Away Success for Holywell Flintshire Golf Captains and Past Captains Association Team Trophy
The lads did us proud in defence of the Team Trophy held at Mold yesterday retaining the Cup by one point from Hawarden with Padeswood &Buckley third. Since the inaugural playing of the Trophy in 1977, which we won, Holywell has now taken the honours four times this time justifying the great support we had in entering a strong team for 'Best 3 Scores 'to count. Our Captain, Richie, carded in a very impressive best of the day 40 Stableford points to show his team the way and was brilliantly backed up by Kevin Leech and Gary Jones.

The other members of our 'squad' were Geoff Evans, Pat McDermott, Ivor Pye and Don Fergusson who all acquitted themselves well on the day, indicating our strength in depth looking forward to the 'Hat-trick' next year! The photo shows the winning three, The Captain, Gary Jones and Kevin Leech receiving their prizes from the Association Vice-Captain, Tony Godden of Northop GC.
Thank you Burt Moore for this write up. |
Flintshire Junior Championships
Thanks to Michael O’Boyle for the following: Well done those who took part in the Flintshire Championships at Mold last Friday. Special well done to Sian Jones who won the best girls' prize and William Griffiths who won the 37-45 handicap category. Sian played some fantastic golf throughout last week seeing her handicap getting reduced from 22 to 14. Well done Sian.Great Holywell Junior Golf. |
The future is bright
Every week during term time there will be FREE junior coaching available to all junior members. If you have a potential junior member in your family bring them along to a session to see if they enjoy it, and if they do Junior membership starts from £30.00 a year. The sessions run on a Wednesday evening from 5pm – 6.30pm, and all equipment is available to borrow. It would be great to grow the Junior section and help secure the long-term future of the club. |
Club Shirts
The remainder of the pre ordered Club Shirts have now arrived and are ready for collection from the Pro Shop. Anyone that didn’t order a shirt should not worry as I have some spares available.

Speak to us first
As you are aware the shop at Holywell is smaller than we would perhaps all like and because of that I am not able to stock everything for everyone. I am however able to order pretty much anything anyone would want and at competitive prices. Where possible I always price match the internet and sometimes be even cheaper. So, if you can’t see what you want in the shop please ask me and I will endeavour to do my best to get hold of it for you. |
How’s your game holding up?
If your golf game hasn’t got off to a great start this year, it’s time to do something about it. Going out on the golf course week after week and doing the same things will rarely lead to success and, if anything, will result in you getting frustrated. We have years of experience and the expert knowledge to help you with every part of your game, and with more competitions on the horizon, including some major board events, now is a great time to consider some lessons or upgrading your equipment. We are currently running our Complete Equipment Solution promotion where we are offering to custom fit you for FREE and give you a FREE after-sales lesson once your new clubs arrive. However, this will only last until the end of the month so don't delay it any longer. Click here to learn more. |
We want to hear from you
If you have any stories from the golf course or information on upcoming events you would like me to publish in the weekly newsletter, please email it across to me at pro@holywellgc.co.uk. |
We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
