Hello and welcome to this week's Holywell Pro Shop Newsletter.

What a difference a week makes! After an artic week at the golf club last week it almost feels tropical this week with temperatures touching a barmy 8 degrees. Certain areas of the course remain wet due to the thaw, for the past few days we have opened 13 holes.

It is great to see some golfers again and long may it continue.

Weather takes its toll...

Due to the weather last week no competitions were played, but this Saturday we have Triple 5.

Gateway to Wales Spring Festival

This Festival is a great opportunity to play 2 other locals courses whilst getting some competitive golf under your belt at the start of the season. Play one, two or all three days with aggregated scores from all three days going towards winning ‘The Leader Gateway to Wales Golf Individual Championship’ plus individual day prizes to 3rd place. The event is open to both ladies and gents playing individual Stableford.

Is the ball going too far?

This week the R&A and USGA have completed the annual review of driving distance in golf. Both governing bodies are getting increasingly concerned with how far the ball is going at the elite level. From the time period between 2003 and 2016 the average driving distance on world wide tours went up 0.2 yards a year. From 2016 – 2017 the average distance went up just over 3 yards. Because of this both governing bodies are talking about introducing a reduced length golf ball at all levels that would bring yardages back 20%.

I’m interested to see what your opinion is on this topic. Do you enjoy watching the players on the TV hitting drives over 300 yards and really low scoring? Do you think we should be looking at rolling the ball back to reduce the distance it flights? How would this affect your enjoyment of golf?

My opinion is that rolling the ball back for everyone would kill the game of golf and would dramatically effect participation numbers. Golf is hard enough as it is, and I know from my experience coaching everyone wants to hit it further not shorter. Regarding the low scores on the Professional tours I believe that is down to lazy course design and poor course set up.

WGC – Mexico Championship

Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson defeated Justin Thomas in a play-off to win the WGC-Mexico Championship - his first victory since the 2013 Open. Thomas holed his second shot for eagle at the last for a seven-under 64 but watched fellow American Mickelson birdie the 15th and 16th to post 66 for a 16-under total.Mickelson, 47, parred the first extra hole to win his 46th title and end a run of 101 tournaments without a win. England's Tyrell Hatton missed out on the play-off after a bogey on the 18th.

Interestingly this event was played at around 8000ft meaning the ball travelled around 15% further, which meant the course played around 6200yds and yet the scoring wasn’t ridiculously low.
